- Best UT Mods
-
- More than any other first-person shooter, Unreal Tournament is designed to be
- flexible for the player. It ships with a handful of mods, called mutators, that
- you can easily use to modify any of the game types. But these are just the
- beginning of game customization options. You can download player-made mutators
- and double-click on a "umod" file to install them. Then you can tweak the mods
- to your heart's content from within Unreal Tournament's shell screen. No other
- game has been so friendly to third-party mods. But for every excellent mutator,
- there are about a dozen awful ones.
-
- Keep in mind that this list is by no means definitive. Not only are there other
- good mutators, but there are new ones being made all the time. We're looking
- forward to three in particular, all ports of Quake mods: Rocket Arena, Action
- Unreal Tournament, and Jailbreak. But in the meantime, we think the following
- are some of Unreal Tournament's best mutators.
-
-
-
- DecalStay
-
- Author: Mike Lambert (Pipeline Productions)
-
-
- Unreal Tournament uses images called decals to represent scorch marks, blood
- splatters, bullet holes, and Snot Gun stains. Because these images accumulate
- over time, they can hog up an increasing amount of memory if a game goes on for
- too long. To prevent this, Unreal Tournament erases older decals fairly quickly;
- try to write your name with a Pulse Gun, and the letters will start to disappear
- before you've finished. DecalStay overrides this feature by letting you
- configure how long decals remain. You can set a length of time for them to stay,
- or you can make them permanent if you think your hardware can handle the extra
- burden.
-
- Description
-
- DecalStay makes all decals last anywhere from 2 times their normal length to 99
- times their normal length, or it can make the decal last forever. This allows
- for the creation of death match games in which battles look like they have just
- taken place even thirty minutes after they actually occured. It also allows for
- some incredible pulse-cannon alt-fire graffiti, since those decals can stay on
- for much longer periods of time. In addition, this mod does not require any
- action on the part of the server. This mod can be played on any server, in any
- game, allowing you to go online immediately.

-
- UWar
-
- Author: Ob1-Kenobi
-
- UWar adds a power-up system to Unreal Tournament that allows you to increase
- your speed and jumping, multiply the damage you inflict, regenerate your health
- automatically, and reduce the damage you take when you're hit. When you frag
- someone, a floating letter, corresponding to one of these abilities, jumps out
- of that player's body. As you accumulate letters, the level of those particular
- abilities increases, and, in team games, you can share power-ups by dropping
- them for someone else to pick up. Your rating in each of the four abilities is
- clearly displayed on the HUD as a percentage.
-
- Description
-
- UWar is an Unreal Tournament modification similar to the runes used in mods such
- as Capture the Flag (and variants) and Lithium for Quake II. Runes give players
- the ability to shoot for more damage, run faster, and heal on the fly, and so
- on. Unlike other systems, which limit players to one rune per person, UWar
- enables players to grab as many runes as they can, regardless of category. In
- addition, players get progressively stronger as they accumulate more runes in
- each particular category. Your relative strength in each is displayed on your
- HUD (Heads Up Display).

-
- BoomDeath Mutator
-
-
- This mutator creates the potential for a delicious little surprise with every
- frag. The mod allows the server operator to set the frequency for a BoomDeath
- incident to occur. It's a percentage chance that anytime someone dies, he or she
- will explode with the force of the Redeemer--in effect, the dying player will
- become ground zero. If any players die in the ensuing blast, the person who
- exploded will get the points for fragging them.
-
- Description
-
- BoomDeath sets a percentage chance that a Redeemer warhead will explode after a
- player dies. Frags are counted normally, with the exception that the dead player
- gets a frag for every player killed in their death-explosion. This balances the
- game, because newbies have a chance to strike back when they are constantly
- being fragged, and an expert player on a spree or rampage has an increased
- chance of being blown up and losing all their weapons and armor. Of course, it
- helps if you can get behind a wall before the explosion.

- Unreal Tournament Bonus Pack
-
- Author: Epic Games
-
- This isn't just a mutator, because it also adds some new maps and player skins.
- (We love that Nali cow, but can't quite get a handle on head shots against those
- poor beasts.) The Bonus Pack also adds Epic's runes to the mutator list. Pick up
- a rune and you have a special power, but choose wisely, because you can carry
- only one. There are runes for extra damage, regeneration, extra shielding, and
- added speed. The Relic of Vengeance explodes like a Redeemer a second after
- you've been killed, ideally taking out your killer. When you've been fragged,
- the Relic of Redemption respawns you with your inventory intact and your health
- restored. And, more importantly, it doesn't give your killer the frag!
-
- Description
-
- The Unreal Tournament Bonus Pack is a big thank-you from the creators of the
- game to all who purchased the full version. It includes new character skins: the
- Skaarj Hybrid, Nali, and the Nali WarCow. It also adds new levels: DM-Agony,
- DM-Cybrosis][, DM-ArcaneTemple, DM-Malevolence, DM-Shrapnel][, DM-HealPod][,
- DM-Mojo][, CTF-Cybrosis][, CTF-Hydro16, CTF-Noxion16, and CTF-Darji16. Finally,
- it adds relics to your game. You add relics into an Unreal Tournament game the
- same way you add mutators. You can add as many or as few as your heart desires.
- They each spawn over a random path node and move around the map if nobody picks
- them up after a short interval. They can be used with any game type that Unreal
- Tournament supports. There are six relics: The Relic of Strength, the Relic of
- Regeneration, the Relic of Defense, the Relic of Speed, the Relic of Redemption,
- and the dreaded Relic of Vengeance. You may carry only one relic at a time.
-
- Note: This pack should be compatible with previous versions of Unreal Tournament
- as well as all future versions. However, it is strongly suggested for maximum
- performance and bug-free gameplay you install the latest patch.

- Holy Wars
-
- Author: Sten Larsson and Thomas Ericsson (Flatware Design)
-
- This variation on tag makes one player the saint and everyone else a sinner. The
- saint is the first person to pick up a glowing halo that spawns on the map. From
- that point on, everyone is out to get the halo and become the saint. The reason
- you want to be the saint is because this is the best way to get frags. The saint
- can frag anyone, but sinners can only frag the saint. Sinners who break the
- rules by killing other sinners lose points and eventually become fair game for
- everyone. Holy Wars makes for a very focused and fast-moving game of one player
- vs. everyone else.
-
- Description
-
- In HolyWars everyone fights for the halo. At the beginning of the game everyone
- is a sinner. After 20 seconds the halo will appear somewhere in the level. The
- first person to pick it up becomes a saint. At this point everyone tries to kill
- the saint. To defend himself and get frags, the saint will try to kill everyone.
- When the saint dies, the halo is dropped. The person who picks it up becomes the
- next saint, and the game continues. The halo will disappear if it is not picked
- up within ten seconds of its appearance. The halo will later reappear at its
- "spawnpoint."
-
- To prevent people from ruining the game for others, a sinner who kills other
- sinners becomes a heretic. A heretic cannot shoot other sinners, only the saint.
- To pick up easy frags, everyone else can kill the heretics. The only way to
- escape heretic status is to pick up the halo.

- SlaveMaster
-
- SlaveMaster is one of the most clever and innovative mods for a first-person
- shooter we've seen since Jailbreak. When you frag someone, he turns into a
- ghostly figure who can't fight until he's earned enough points to get back into
- the game. To earn points, he has to float around the level and perform tasks for
- you. He is the servant and you are his master. He can pick up weapons, ammo, and
- power-ups, each worth various amounts of points. Or he can tag your opponents
- with soul flares so you can track them for easier kills. There's an elaborate
- scoring system, so the more valuable your help to your master, the sooner you'll
- come back as a regular combatant and the more stuff you'll have when you
- respawn.
-
- Description
-
- In Slave Master, when you kill somebody, a small, fat, white soul will pop out
- of the body. This is now your slave. The souls' names will turn gold in the HUD
- (Heads Up Display), and they can give you favors to earn their freedom. When
- players are killed, they are also spawned as weaponless slaves.
-
- The HUD will show who owns you and how much favor you have. It will also show
- you how much favor you need to be set free. Being a slave has an upside: nobody
- can hurt you. If somebody has a problem with you, the person has to take it up
- with your master.
-
- There are basically two options as a slave: you can hang out and assume that
- your owner will be killed soon, or you can run around and collect any power-ups
- in the level. Any power-up you touch will be sent as a gift to your master. If
- he does not need it, you will not be able to pick it up, and it will be
- worthless.
-
- As soon as you collect enough favor, you will respawn normally at a random
- location. When your master sets you free, whether it's because you master dies
- or you earn your freedom through hard work, the master sets up your new life
- according to how much you were liked as a slave.

- Carry the Flag
- Versix (Nexus Entertainment)
-
- Carry the Flag lets you change the mechanics of capture the flag games so the
- flag doesn't just magically teleport back to your base when you touch it.
- There's a wide range of options for how your flag can be moved after you've
- wrested it from an enemy trying to carry it back to his base. You can set this
- mutator so you have to pick the flag up and carry it back to base. You can even
- set it so you can hide your flag somewhere on the map or hand it off to other
- players. In Team Fortress mode, you can't pick up your own flag after it's been
- dropped--instead, you have to defend it for a preset amount of time before it is
- zapped back to your base.
-
- Description
-
- Carry The Flag (CarryTF) is the CTF game as it should have been. In this game,
- you cannot return your flag by simply touching it; rather, you have to carry it
- back to your base. There are also a lot of extra options for changing the way
- CarryTF is played. These options include Dropcapping, or capturing the enemy
- flag by touching your own flag when it has been dropped. So, now you have the
- option of grabbing your own flag, dropping it outside the enemy base, and then
- taking the enemy flag and running back outside to capture their flag--right in
- their face!
-
- You can also set up CarryTF so that you can capture the flag by touching your
- base, even if your flag isn't there. Another option is Team Fortress mode, which
- will stop carrying of the friendly flag, but stops it from teleporting too. You
- have to wait for the flag to respawn back at base, and only the enemy can pick
- up your flag when it has been dropped. The amount of time before the flag
- respawns is configurable, and you can set it to an infinite amount of time if
- you like. However, if you do this, you better have Dropcap or Cap without the
- friendly flag enabled.
-
- No matter how you like your CTF, CarryTF can cater to your needs--unless, of
- course, you like magic teleporting flags like the current UT ones.

-
-
- NIUT
-
- Author: Mike Fox
-
- NIUT stands for No Item Unreal Tournament, a mutator that removes all the
- weapons, ammo, and power-ups from a map. Instead of running around to find
- equipment--which favors the players who time the spawn cycle--every player
- starts with the same weapon. After a configurable period of time, that weapon
- changes either randomly or according to a list you set up. One minute you and
- your opponent are circle strafing each other with chain guns; the next you're
- lining up multiple rocket shots at one another from across the room. If you
- want, you can also have jump boots, invisibility, and the damage amplifier make
- random appearances among all the players.
-
- Description
-
- NIUT is a mutator for Unreal Tournament that is based on the NIQ for Quake II
- mod. NIUT removes all power-ups and the like from levels so that games don't
- revolve around controlling these. Everyone has the same weapon, and you don't
- have to know the level inside out to do well. NIUT forces players to be skilled
- with all of the weapons in the game if they want to finish on top (see a screen
- shot of the interface).
-
- Infiltration
-
- Jesse Warren Taylor
-
- Infiltration makes Unreal Tournament much more, uh, real. This mutator swaps out
- all of those fantasy weapons and puts in the sort of realistic guns you'd find
- in Rogue Spear. It also puts in a new damage model, radar to find the other
- players, a stand-off game type that's a variation of Last Man Standing, and an
- option to play any game in total darkness using flashlights that not only help
- you find the enemy, but also help the enemy find you. Although the weapons in
- Infiltration are more lethal, they have to be aimed more carefully. Infiltration
- is slower, more precise, and much more tense.
-
-
- Description
-
- Infiltration is a military modification for Unreal Tournament. It combines the
- power of the Unreal Tournament game engine with a military look and feel (not to
- mention the ability to play against your friends or intelligent
- computer-controlled bots in custom levels). Boasting well over 20 weapons, five
- different player classes, and three new game modes, Infiltration attempts to be
- one of the most ambitious game modifications ever created. The biggest factor is
- realism: if it can happen, the developers want it as part of the package.

-
- Unreal4Ever Tournament
-
- Author: Holger Huck and Wlater Sharrow
-
- It's hard to believe that Unreal's weapons could be made even crazier, but this
- is exactly what Unreal4Ever Tournament (U4ET) does. It adds 34 new weapons. Not
- just new weapons, but wildly inventive, fun, fall-out-of-your-chair-laughing,
- wacky weapons. That's 34, each with primary and secondary firing modes.
-
- Some of the weapons are just big guns, like the sawed-off shotgun, the Vulcan
- Cannon, the rail gun, or the Flak Cannon's big brother, the massive Howitzer.
- Some of the weapons are mildly realistic, like the M-16, the pitchfork, the
- chainsaw, the Python revolver, or the Compound Bow, which works almost like the
- Snot Gun--pull back the button and then hold it down until you're ready to fire.
-
- Description
-
- Flash forward 50 years to the time following the destruction of the Skaarj home
- world by the Dimensional Rifts. The entire Skaarj race has vanished without a
- trace. No one is certain whether or not the race simply died out and their
- bodies were destroyed by the plague of Dimensional Rifts, or if the Skaarj race
- sought refuge in some alternate dimension. What is certain, however, is that the
- remains of their planet have become a gold mine for a certain human corporation
- (see screen shots).
-
- Over the past ten years, a conglomeration of weapon- and spacecraft-building
- companies known as the United For Earth corporation (U4E) has been slowly
- plundering the scarred Skaarj home world for all kinds of new technology and
- biological treasures that have accumulated on its surface from the Dimensional
- Rifts. The amount of materials being recovered was already overwhelming their
- labs and testing facilities, when one of the company presidents suggested a more
- proactive testing policy: The U4E Tournaments.
-
- The original Mod had 27 new weapons, a great menu system, and works wonderfully
- on networks. This latest version includes the Medi-Gun, for healing yourself and
- teammates. It also has numerous bug fixes, superior performance, and about a
- dozen new weapons. In order to use this Mod, you will need version 413 of UT.
